Coffee is one of the most popular energy drink for college students.
Twenty year old Kyle Collins, who makes coffee part of his morning routine, “It’s a good pick me up in the morning and great way to start my day,” said.
But there is a downside to coffee if a person drinks too much.
However, most people don’t have to worry “Consuming 4 to 12 mg/kg, has been associated with anxiety and jitteriness, according to a double-blind, placebo-controlled study on 26 children,” Dietitian at Stonehill college, Kim Pierce said.
Nineteen year old Caroline Chaves says, “If I don’t have it I will not function.”
Chaves said if she doesn't have it, she will have withdrawals that include, migraines, irritability and sleepiness.
“It is good for me because I can function, but I am aware the dangers of too much caffeine,” Chaves said.
Kim Pierce, said coffee “In most healthy adults, caffeine can be safe and beneficial when consumed in moderation,” she said.
“Children should avoid caffeine. Adolescents should consume no more than 100mg per day,” Pierce said.
Pierce said caffeine is the world’s most widely consumed central nervous system stimulant. And for health healthy adults, a caffeine intake of 400 mg/day or less is considered safe.
“Adults who consume low to moderate amounts of caffeine (1 to 3 mg/kg or 12.5 to 100 mg/day) can benefit from improved exercise endurance, cognition, reaction time, and mood,” Pierce said.
According to Pierce, “Headache and fatigue can occur after short-term, high-dose use 6 to 15 days of 600 mg/day or more.”
Kim Pierce said caffeine intoxication and that it can cause insomnia, tremors, tachycardia, heart palpitations, and upset stomach.

“At the highest levels, 5 to 10 g, it can induce vomiting and abdominal pain, hypokalemia, hallucinations, increased intracranial pressure, cerebral edema, stroke, paralysis, altered consciousness, rigidity, seizures, arrhythmias, and death,” Pierce said.
College student, Zachary Henry said he does not choose to drink coffee because of its negative effects. “I choose not to drink coffee because it is something that my body does not naturally make, it makes me jittery and anxious so I try to stick to decaf,” the nineteen year old said.
“I worked at a coffee shop in high school and that's when the addiction started,” twenty year old Lauren Rich said.
Rich worked at Honey Dew and she Prefer their coffee over Dunkins. “I love coffee, I usually get it everyday before work, I just can’t live without it,” Rich said.
“I do not mind spending money on coffee because I really need it,” Stonehill sophomore, Cailin Little said. “I drink coffee 4-5 times a week, usually in the mornings and sometimes in the afternoon for an extra pick me up, Little said.
“I spend probably around $12-15 a week on coffee,” Little said “ and I drink monster and redbull only when I really, really, really, can’t afford to go to sleep.”
Other students like Eliza Motlin and Hannah Kelly drink coffee just because they like the taste.
“I drink coffee every day because I like the taste, Kelly said. “”Caramel swirl with almond milk and sugar. I choose almond milk cuz im allergic to dairy and because it has better health benefits.”
Motlin agreed “ I drink coffee more in the summer than any other season because I prefer it iced. I drink it for the flavor, I don’t get much out of it.”
Motlin said she recently started drinking hot coffee and that usually gives her some energy.
There are also students who choose not to drink coffee for various reasons.
Nineteen year old Rachel Hynes does not drink coffee or energy drinks because they don’t provide her with energy and she doesn't like the taste.
“I have to put a lot of extras such as cream, sugar and flavor which add unnecessary calories and sugar to my diet, which has negative effects on health anyones health in general,” Hynes said, “Drinking black coffee is the most efficient way and healthy way of drinking coffee and I can’t stand the taste.”
Hynes did admit to occasionally drinking some herbal tea “Its non-caffeinated and I drink it black to make it a healthy choice.”
Leah Ricciarelli, seventeen year old senior in high school thinks it’s expensive. “It’s about $3 a day. I have never had coffee, I don’t think I would like the taste,” she said.
“I do like iced tea but I drink that cuz it tastes good but I don’t drink it very often,” Ricciarelli said.
A study at Harvard University compared the benefits of coffee and tea.
The three big benefits of tea include “Reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, protection from cancer and reduce risk of high blood pressure.”
With that said, there are a few pitfall, the Harvard University study states “Advertisements claim tea can speed up weight looks, but research on the effects of green tea and fat reduction have shown little primes of weight loss benefits and avoid purchasing expensive bottled teas or teas in coffee shops that contain added sweeteners.”
The study encourages to brew your own tea at home to enjoy its maximum benefits.
The Harvard University study also states that there is a reduction of heart disease and stroke risk, lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, protection against gallstones and a lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease comes along with drinking coffee.
The study also focuses on the hidden calories, when drinking coffee the healthiest option is to drink it black. An 8 oz cup of coffee contains only two calories.
